Naso Labial Folds

What are Nasolabial Folds?

Nasolabial folds are the creases that run from the the edges of the nose to the sides of the mouth. When we smile, these creases become much more pronounced and, for this reason, are also referred to as ‘smile lines.’

How do Nasolabial Folds form?

The main reason these folds appear to deepen with age is because of the loss of foundation underneath the mid-face and under-eye area, also known as the “base of the face.” As the foundation beneath this mid-face area wears away, the skin in this area, particularly the cheek, begins to sag downward over the nasolabial fold, creating a shadowy effect that makes the crease more apparent.

Is there anything in particular that causes Nasolabial Folds to appear?

The most common factor in the deepening of nasolabial folds is age and natural foundation loss (base loss). In addition to aging, the appearance of nasolabial folds may be caused by excessive weight loss or tooth loss, which leads to bone loss. Additionally, smoking can be a major accelerant in the appearance of nasolabial folds.

Treatments for Nasolabial Folds

The simplest way to treat nasolabial folds is to fill in the skin beneath the folds themselves.

The more effective method involves lifting the skin in the mid-face region and the outer cheeks in addition to filling in the skin below the Nasolabial folds. By restoring the base support of the skin in the areas above the nasolabial folds, the effect is to lift the skin up rather than just filling in the creases.

Jaw Augmentation

There are many reasons to undergo jaw enhancement. Enhancing the jaw line with dermal filler injections can give you a more youthful appearance by filling in loose skin. By smoothing the contours of the jaw, it increases the definition of this area. Jaw enhancement can also decrease the appearance of jowls, or hanging folds of fat and skin drooping beneath the jawline.

Who is suitable to have this treatment?

Jaw enhancement may be right for you if you’ve always felt you had a weak jaw line, or if you’ve begun to notice signs of ageing in this area of your face. Many candidates are men wishing for a more chiselled jaw or women who wish their jaw looked softer and more feminine. Jaw enhancement injections are popular among patients searching for a minimally invasive way to change the contours of the jaw area.

How can I reduce my jowls or drooping mouth corners non surgically?

Jowl formation is due to the descent of the cheeks below the jawline. This disrupts the jawline. To correct this, a facelift can be performed to lift the cheeks back to their original position and straighten the jawline. However, for those who are not willing to undergo surgery, there are a number of non-surgical options.

These include:

Dermal fillers – can be injected into the areas around the jowls (but not into the jowls) to hide their appearance by blending the jowls into the adjacent areas. This disguises the jowls and straightens the jawline, providing a non-surgical jowl reduction. Also, by supporting the mouth corners with dermal fillers, it is possible to turn the mouth corners back to a more neutral or upgoing direction. Various dermal fillers can be used for the above purposes.

Anti-wrinkle injections – can help to turn the mouth corners up by relaxing the muscles that pull the corners of the mouth downwards
